Recruitment

This fall is a great time to check out Greek life at UWA! We will have several events from now until rush where you can get to know the active chapter. Sigma Pi's Rush will be held on August 29th at 7pm behind Gilbert Hall. Here you can meet the brothers and ask any questions you might have about Sigma Pi and the Greek experience. We'll be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, and there will be kan jam and corn hole tournaments. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you are interested in participating in 2017 Fall Recruitment and have further questions about Sigma Pi, fraternity life at UWA, or the recruitment process, please click here to CONTACT US!

Why Sigma Pi Fraternity?

Sigma Pi Fraternity was founded in 1897 at Vincennes University, in Vincennes, Indiana. Our Executive Office is located at the historic Mitchell House in Lebanon, Tennessee. The Fraternity is one of the top men’s collegiate organizations in North America, with more than 120 active chapters and colonies in the United States and Canada. With over 100,000 alumni and 5,700 active undergraduates; our men strive for excellence by living our core values to promote fellowship, develop character and leadership, advance heightened moral awareness, enable academic achievement, and inspire service. Sigma Pi is the only Greek letter organization with an international philanthropic program, The ACE Project, specifically designed to give back to our host institutions.

OUR MISSION
To advance man's quest for excellence.

OUR VISION
Our men will strive for excellence by living our core values.

OUR CORE VALUES
  • Promote fellowship
  • Develop character and leadership
  • Advance heightened moral awareness
  • Enable academic achievement
  • Inspire service

OUR CREED
I believe in Sigma Pi, a Fellowship of kindred minds, united in Brotherhood to advance Truth and Justice, to promote Scholarship, to encourage Chivalry, to diffuse Culture, and to develop Character, in the Service of God and Man; and I will strive to make real the Fraternity's ideals in my own daily life.

How do I join a fraternity at the University of West Alabama?

Each year, fraternities set aside time for membership recruitment activities, also known as Rush. During the membership recruitment period, interested men have an opportunity to visit the fraternity of their choice and to explore what Greek life has to offer.

Rush is a period of careful examination and choosing; it is a time for students and parents to ask questions, define financial obligations, time commitments, and membership requirements. Fraternity rush is year round although a formal rush program is sponsored by the IFC at the beginning of each semester.

Requirements of new associate members:

Life in the UWA Greek community begins when you formally accept a bid, or invitation, to become a new member of a chapter. During this program, you will learn fraternity and chapter history, founders, symbols, standards, and information about the chapter’s philanthropy. The friendships you develop during your fraternity days will last a lifetime.

Greeks at the University of West Alabama are committed to new member education programs, which are informative, but forbid the use of hazing. The University of West Alabama and the Interfraternity Council have strict non-hazing policies, which are actively enforced. Moreover, the Theta Gamma chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity has a zero tolerance policy for hazing. A copy of our risk management policy is accessible here.

Why should I go Greek?

  • Of North America’s 50 largest corporations, Fraternity men and Sorority women head 43.
  • 7 out of 10 people listed in Who's Who are Greek.
  • 85% of Fortune 500 executives belong to a Fraternity or Sorority.
  • 40 of 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910 were Fraternity men.
  • 76% of all Congressmen and Senators belong to a Fraternity or Sorority.

Every US President and Vice-President, except two in each office, born since the first social Fraternity was founded in 1825, have been members of a Fraternity. Statistics from The University of West Alabama show that Greeks have a higher GPA and a higher rate of graduation from college than do their non-Greek counterparts.
